Greetings from the Northwest... Howard Rice (TAE Class 1961) and I live in Oregon and have since 1973. We were sorry to miss the reunions this time, but did get to see many classmates at our 40th reunions. The ones I knew the best were those of us who attended Hopkins Street School all through elementary classes.

I have no family left in Elmira anymore. Both my parents are dead. My sister Joyce (10 years younger) lives in Halifax, PA and my brother Dave Phillips (5 years younger) lives in Kingbury, Texas. They both attended SHS also. We have 4 kids...twins sons 47/ adopted daughter from Sri Lanka age 35/ and another daughter by birth who is 33. We became grandparents for the first time at 60... and now have a girl who is 8 and little brother who is 4. This sure keeps things lively around here! I knew I was approaching 70 in a bit over a year, but I must say when Gary and the one from TAE let us know about our 50th REUNIONS - that was a shock.

Where has the time gone??????? It doesn`t seem that long ago that we all were learning to drive or gagging over stinks in Chemistry or disecting frogs hauling the Erie Bell back from Parker Field...is it just me or was life simpler in those days? Even though I graduated in the class of 62, there were many student friends I knew in the class of 61. My high-school sweetheart graduated in the year of 61. Well do I remember being picked up every morning for school in that big, beautiful white car he drove. The old Southside High School is truly a monument in those days and I am still sad to have seen it turned into office's of many sorts. To walk the halls, see and be a part of the auditorium, the glamour of the musicals like "South Pacific" still linger in my mind. SHS, you sure were in a beautiful piece of architecture for me to have the privilege to attend....

It has been 50 years now since we all walked across the stage at SHS and received that piece of paper taking us all into a GREAT BIG world and a whole NEW adventure. For me it has never stopped, every corner has presented different and new opportunities. All this would have never happened had it not been for SHS and the great teachers and people that we came in contact with.

With the grace of GOD and the care and love of all we made it to this point in our lives. To those who have passed before us, they are all in a better place and free from the worries we face today in a troubled world. Our parents and the parents of our friends that always treated us like their own, also had a great influence on us and our future. We all need to reflect and honor those who tried with all their influence to give us direction for what we might discover. My heart goes out to all who have been involved in my life for you have influenced what I have become. God Bless and keep you all safe and secure.

I have worked and traveled in 44 States and 47 different counties in my 50 years and now live in Wyoming where the deer and the antelope play. By the way there are more antelope in Wyoming than people. It is different and wonderful and this is just a stepping stone for tomorrow. Currently my wife is managing a 5 Star Hotel here in Gillette, WY and we will be busy hosting the National High School Rodeo finals this summer so will not be able to attend the reunion.

Really miss Elmira area, especially the Souside and Pine City. I miss playing in the Pine City Band the most, those were some REALLY wonderful days and years, marching those LONG parades and loving every minute of it. Also playing in the SHS Band. Been in Joplin, Missouri since 1967. Before retiring from teaching high school art, my students knew as much as I did about Elmira, especially Mark Twain, ice skating on Miller Pond and going to school when it snowed an inch or two. I have not been back to Elmira for a long time. Hopefully, I will make it back this summer. I lived and worked in North Carolina for 10 years working for Special Forces. I have such happy memories of high school. Y-Teens, the class plays, football games wearing my racoon coat. Ken and I are both retired and I'm happy doing some volunteer work, and using the pick and shovel in the garden. We sold our home in Pine City and live on Seneca Lake now in a small cabin.

Comments: Thanks to all who planned  the 40th reunion. It was truly a time-warp overload. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing everyone, but I left feeling sad that I only had bits and pieces of lives I cherished as a teenager.

High School was a rough time for me as it is for many, I fear. What deeply distrubed me was the number of deaths in our class and how many could be attributed to one form of cancer or another. Ten percent is way too many at our age. Will start digging for Brokovich stuff in the months to come that might explain the gross number of cancer victims in the Chemung Valley or at least light a fire of expose. Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone fill me in on how it was??  I mean how it REALLY was..Hint, hint, nudge, nudge.

Do any of you remember Iszard's tea room?  My gram used to take me there and I thought it was the most wonderful place on earth!

Kathy Kittle got me my first job as a ticket seller at the Regent movie theatre.  We were in that tiny booth that was freezing in the winter. Mr. Marble the manager had a tiny space heater in it that would fry your socks and shoes while the rest of you froze.
He fired me on Christmas Eve for not counting the TAKE right and I cried all the way home. Talk about a Dickens' moment!!

Then Joan Sponyoe and I got jobs at Artistic Card Company.  I was running some kind of a wierd printing press and she was putting cards and envelopes together.  What a circus!!
I miss hiking up Mount Zoar hill and seeing the river.
I think I wasn't too happy in High School but it seems now like I had wonderful friend.  But then I felt like some kind of wierdo.  Maybe that goes intrinsically with being a teenager.

Comments: Thought with my Univ of Kentucky and then Air Force career...thus living all over US/overseas...I was the only one out of touch. Finding out that's not true.  Jack Page and I (via Classmates.com) got back in touch a few months ago, and now all this!

And just discovered Bernadette Malone lives on Capitol Hill, where I spend a lot of time, and just across the Potomac from my Old Town Alexandria home (anyone in DC area, please get in touch). BTW, hope to see Bernadette and Camilla Kane Wednesday...how about that?

Look forward to seeing ALL at the reunion...#1 priority on my schedule now.  Tx to the reunion committee and web masters.
