Occident consolidates its position in death insurance with new coverage for psychological support and home assistance

"The insurer, with more than 1.4 million insured parties, is expanding its value proposition with new services designed to support families beyond the funeral service"

Occident continues to strengthen its position in the death insurance sector with the addition of two new coverage options: bereavement support at home and psychological assistance. The company, which recorded 5.6% growth in the death sector in 2025, higher than the average increase for the sector (3.6%), has more than 1.4 million insured parties. With this evolution of its value proposition, the insurer expands the support it offers to families beyond funeral arrangements, incorporating services focused on emotional wellbeing and care support after the death of a loved one.

This evolution reflects the transformation of death insurance in Spain. According to the report 'Death insurance. 2025', prepared by the entity Cooperative Research between Insurance Companies and Pension Funds (ICEA), the sector maintains a high penetration and continues to grow in premium volume, while the differentiating value of the companies is increasingly focused on offering comprehensive support to families before, during and after death.

Support that goes beyond funeral services

Among the main new features is the addition of Psychological Assistance coverage, a specialised service to help the immediate family members of the deceased—parents, spouse or partner, children and siblings—to cope with the grieving process. The coverage includes 24-hour telephone psychological support with unlimited consultations and a proactive support service from the company. In addition, it includes up to three individual sessions with a specialist, which can be conducted in person or via video call during the first year after death.

Along with this benefit, Occident incorporates Home Bereavement Support coverage, designed to offer practical assistance to the spouse or common-law partner, ascendants and descendants of the deceased, provided that assistance is needed to carry out basic activities of daily living during the first weeks after the loss. Among the services included, one of the highlights is up to 20 hours of home care during the first month after death, intended to facilitate basic household tasks.

The coverage also includes specific support for the care of the elderly, dependents or those in complex family situations, including mobilisation tasks, accompaniment, support in taking medication and assistance with medical visits. It also incorporates social, family and dependency advice, as well as an unlimited telephone and video call consultation service.

In the words of Joan Miquel Cervera, Occident's Director of Life Risk Products and Death, 'death insurance has evolved towards a comprehensive support model. Today, families need much more than just the organisation of the funeral service: They require emotional support, guidance, and practical help to cope with a particularly complex time. With these new coverage options, we continue to strengthen a value proposition focused on supporting people when they really need it.'

With this evolution of its death insurance, Occident continues to consolidate its position in one of the most established sectors in Spain, reinforcing a proposal based on innovation in services and increasingly comprehensive support to meet the real needs of families at one of the most delicate moments of their lives.
