"Rain damage tops the list, accounting for 65% of the total claims due to adverse weather. Video appraisals, which grew to 53,885, 26% more than in 2024, are becoming the established method to handle this type of assignment."
In 2025, Occident handled a total of 150,692 claims caused by meteorological phenomena, reinforcing its capacity for attention and assessment to respond to the needs of its insured parties in the face of these adverse events. Rain was the cause of the highest volume of claims throughout the year, 65% of the total, with 97,214 claims, followed by wind, which generated 20,700 claims, with 14% of the total, and hail, with 12,381 (8% of the total). Within the latter, 3,221 claims corresponded to damage to vehicles. Snow, meanwhile, had a very limited impact, with just 58 incidents recorded throughout the year.
In terms of territorial distribution, the provinces with the highest number of weather-related incidents were Barcelona, with 29,538 incidents, Valencia, with 13,563, and Madrid, with 8,250.
Furthermore, among the most significant weather events to have occurred in 2025, Storm Alice stood out, causing intense rainfall in the Valencian Community, Tarragona, and the Balearic Islands in October. It resulted in 6,571 orders to the networks of professional Occident collaborators. Storm Laurence also had a significant impact, with strong winds and rainfall that mostly affected Andalusia in March, with 2,865 orders processed.
March was actually the month with the most activity due to adverse weather phenomena, with 18,647 orders, due to Storm Laurence and a storm recorded at the beginning of the month in Murcia with heavy rainfall and flooding. October followed with 14,789 orders, coinciding with the passage of Storm Alice, and April, with a total of 10,908. In contrast, August, February, and June saw the least impact due to weather conditions, with 4,286, 7,323, and 7,410 orders, respectively.
Video appraisals and special devices to support the insured party
Occident continues to promote video appraisal as a tool to streamline claims management and reduce the need for travel, especially when there is a high concentration of incidents such as high-impact weather phenomena. In 2025, the company carried out 53,885 atmospheric video appraisals, which represents an increase of 26% compared to the 42,693 registered in 2024 and more than double compared to the 25,509 video appraisals in 2023. Furthermore, it is worth highlighting that the use of video appraisals has reduced the average time needed to close these types of cases by 1.7 days and contributes to the reduction of travel-related emissions. This initiative reinforces Occident's commitment to responsible solutions that promote sustainability and care for the environment.
Likewise, in the face of adverse events such as these types of meteorological events, Occident puts together special units to channel requests and inquiries, supported by its network of mediators and professionals. As a result, insured parties have access to telephone support to handle their inquiries and manage claims, and they also receive tailored advice from their mediator. In these cases, the insurer also strengthens its network of experts, who assess and evaluate the damage caused in the affected areas, and sends weather alerts before the storm occurs to prevent damage.
Antonio Gutiérrez, director of the network of collaborators involved in Occident claims, states that “digitalisation and the application of new technologies have allowed us to make a significant leap in terms of speed and immediacy in assessments in recent years, something that is especially relevant when a high-impact weather event occurs and that results in a more satisfactory experience for customers, as well as more sustainable management due to the reduced number of trips required.”
