Occident updates its health insurance with new diagnostic and highly specialised surgical services and strengthens its digital channel

"The insurer now includes high-precision tests for prostate cancer and digestive disorders, as well as cutting-edge surgeries such as Da Vinci robotic procedures, cardiac cryoablation, and Parkinson’s and epilepsy surgeries, among other innovations"
Occident adds new coverages to its health insurance policies, including Healthcare Assistance and Mixed Reimbursement plans. As a result, from 1 January 2026, all policyholders will be able to access new techniques and innovative treatments, increasing their protection and ability to respond to complex diseases.
The updates focus on providing more accurate diagnostics and state-of-the-art surgical solutions for highly prevalent and complex conditions. Notably, the incorporation of advanced techniques for the early detection and monitoring of prostate tumours and other oncological pathologies, such as molecular imaging PET-CT Choline and PET-CT PSMA, stands out. This is particularly relevant given that prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in Spain, with over 30,000 new cases per year (Spanish Society of Medical Oncology).
In functional diagnostics, high-resolution manometry has been added, a key study for detecting oesophageal disorders such as achalasia or gastroesophageal reflux, which affect a significant portion of the population and can severely impair quality of life if untreated.
Innovation also extends to neurology, with the inclusion of conventional surgeries for Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. In Spain, over 160,000 people live with Parkinson’s (Spanish Society of Neurology), and approximately 30% of epilepsy patients do not respond to conventional medication (Spanish Epilepsy Federation). Surgical interventions in both cases can significantly improve autonomy and well-being by targeting the brain structures involved.
In cardiology, cryoablation has been introduced, a minimally invasive procedure for treating atrial fibrillation, the most common arrhythmia in older adults, which affects over one million people in Spain and is associated with an increased risk of stroke.
The update also covers functional surgical procedures (not cosmetic), such as septoplasty to correct nasal septum deviations that hinder breathing and can cause sleep apnoea or recurrent respiratory infections, and hiatal hernia surgery, especially useful in severe gastroesophageal reflux cases.
Finally, Occident is incorporating Da Vinci robotic surgery for renal and prostate procedures under preferential conditions. This is a technology that enables greater surgical precision, less bleeding, and faster recovery.
With these additions, Occident reinforces its leadership in the insurance sector, offering customers highly complex medical solutions that reflect the latest medical advances, and a comprehensive approach to health.
According to Occident’s Health Product Director, Oihane Susperregui, “With these innovations, we aim to offer cutting-edge and comprehensive coverage”, adding, “Health insurance is one of our strategic lines, and we will continue working to provide the best possible service for the health and well-being of our customers”.
